Shop Closure

The Hackney Road shop sadly closed on 28th August 2021. The online shop is back open to sell our (discounted) last remaining stock—all sale items are non-refundable. We are not moving premises, and once our stock has been sold, the online shop will close permanently.

Statement from May 2021: After many months of reflection during this awful pandemic, it is with a heavy heart I am announcing that Eastern Biological will be closing soon. Our five-year lease will be expiring later this year, and I have made the decision that I will not be seeking to renew it.

Initially positive after the first lockdown, with things seemingly back to ‘normal’, we then had a busy Christmas trading period. However, being forced to shut unexpectedly a few days before Christmas, and then having no substantial income for the next 3+ months – we are still left with overheads, and a hefty VAT bill, which has proved to be a fatal combination.

With no tax relief, government grants have helped only to pay the rent, and we are left with larger than normal outgoings for the foreseeable future. This prevents us from growing and thriving. There unfortunately is no solution or magic potion to take us back to normality quickly, or to help with longer term sustainability.

In 2017, we opened in an already challenging environment on a corner on Hackney Road which was gradually changing, and I was always maintaining a long-term vision for the shop. After spending the last four years establishing the business on the high street, I’m still convinced this is a great place, and for future businesses; however, the pandemic has set the high street back considerably—and the will has all but dissipated to persevere, to try and recover from this.

As we eye the finish line with this pandemic, Eastern Biological has reached its natural conclusion. I am happy with what has been created over the years, and I’d like to thank anyone that has come through these doors and said kind words, and anyone that has been affiliated with us in any way. Thank you for all the support and custom over the years, it will always mean a great deal.

I still very much believe in bricks-and-mortar retail and the uniqueness of the physical experience. A beautiful curated environment, a space with a message, and passionate individualistic shopkeepers—this is what will continue to drive the high street in the future. Support your High Street. Keep reading, keep learning, and keep exploring. And I hope I can stop saying this very soon—stay safe.

Thank You.

Alfred Addis, Owner

Hyperspace Collection

Hyperspace London was a short-lived but memorable online sister shopa space where astrophysicstechnology and science fiction converge.

As Eastern Biological draws to a close (as will Hyperspace), we have merged Hyperspace into this store. You can find all Hyperspace toys, sci-fi books and graphic novels as you click on the collection on the navigation bar on the bottom left. All non-fiction books can be found under Space & Tech in the main Non-Fiction Books section.

In line with government instructions, we have made our shopping environment as safe as can be to minimise the risk to customers, staff and public health. We have undertaken the following measures, and will be updating safety protocol as government advice evolves:

  • As of 19th July 2021, restrictions with face masks have lifted, however they will remain essential to browse in our Hackney Road shop. Our staff wear face masks, and we may refuse entry to customers that will not wear one. We expect customers to be respectful to protect staff and other customers. If you are exempt, please let us know, but we still cannot guarantee entry as our own health and customer's health is the priority. We offer reasonable adjustments, such as click-and-collect, and discounted delivery to exemptions. We also sell disposable face masks in-store for 50p
    • We’ll be offering you hand sanitiser as you walk in
    • There will be a limit of people in the shop at any one time, as well as 6-feet social distancing markings on the floor. Our shop is relatively small, yet has good flow, and a 2-metre distance can be maintained with 2-3 people on each floor, so we are continuing to abide by the 2-metre rule
    • You are encouraged not to touch items, unless you have the intention of purchasing
    • We’re upping our cleaning schedule, wiping down surfaces touched by customers and staff with disinfectant regularly
    • Doors and windows will be open at all times to aid ventilation, when weather permits
    • Signage will clearly indicate we’ll be operating a one-in-one-out system
      • We unfortunately won’t be wrapping gifts in store to reduce contact and time spent at the counter
      • Rubber gloves for browsing are available upon request

Our online shop is operating as normal, but please expect delays to delivery. We'll also be expanding our online range, so please check back regularly. See you soon, and stay safe!

      Fungi Fest 2019 | 6th October

We're excited about taking part at the inaugural festival: Fungi Fest, where we'll be having a mushroom-themed stall!

Fungi Fest is an all-day festival putting a spotlight on the wonderful world of fungiFungi are fundamental to life on earth. They inhabit the air, soil and water. They represent the cycle of life and death; through decomposing organic and synthetic matter such as dead roots and fruits, petroleum and metals - they spin our carbon cycle. Yet the work that fungi does is so often left in the dark, its alien-like forms and complex behaviours often misunderstood or under-represented. Fungi Fest is here to change that.

Fungi Fest will have an array of activities for everyone to engage in. There will be talks from specialists in various fields including scientists, foragers, designers, activists, entrepreneurs, and artists. There will be workshops such as wild mushroom identification, grow your own mushroom, making medicinal mushroom broth and fermentation. Art installations will explore mushrooms and mycelial networks through sound, video and performance. Food vendors will serve mushroom dishes from a wide range of cultures. Market stalls will sell mushroom related products so you can continue your mycelial journey after the festival.

Join the fun on the 6th October 2019 at Hoxton Docks, London. Tickets available now!
